November 22, 2013 – In honor of Finances De•mys•ti•fied turning one, owner Dominique Broadway celebrated her company’s first year at the swanky Park at Fourteenth.  This private event allowed guests to not only congratulate Ms. Broadway on a successful first year, but also ask financial questions in an informal setting.  The event featured signature Finances De•mys•ti•fied drinks, including the Student Loan Debt Killer and Roth IRA cocktails!  Over the past year, Finances De•mys•ti•fied has encouraged young professionals and entrepreneurs to discuss the sometimes sensitive topic by making it fun and trendy, while still educational.

Ms. Broadway shared information about her company in a moving speech that expressed her gratitude for her clients and supporters.  Finances De•mys•ti•fied has helped its clients achieve financial freedom by providing guides to building wealth and stability.  Ms. Broadway also shared her company’s most recent success, which was being the grand prize winner of ELEVATE by Fairfield, in which her company won a $5,000 grant!  To conclude the celebration, guests enjoyed delicious Finances De•mys•ti•fied-themed cupcakes from Kakewalk Cupcakes!

I found out abut the #ELEVATEbyFairfield competition on twitter, and as any other contest or competition…you naturally enter (can’t win if your name isnt in the hat) but you never think you will actually get picked.  I answered all of the questions about my business, my hope and dreams for how I wanted to grow it, said a prayer and hit submit.  I knew that thousands of women entrepreneurs would be entering so I did not think much of it after I submitted my application.

A few weeks later I got a email that I was a finalist! I was so shocked! So of course, I called my mom!  To be selected as a top 20 Finalist was such a honor, as I knew that thousands of people had entered this thing.  As soon as I got access to 3 months of workspace in numerous Fairfield Suites locations. I began to plot!  I wanted to host events in as many locations as possible.  Now this obviously was a little easier said than done, but I made it happen!  I hosted 2 events and several meeting in NY, shot 24 videos for eHow and Demand Studios at the Fairfield Baltimore location (my absolute fav, check out their Lombard Loft) and I hosted over 30 meetings at the DC location amongst other things.

Once the contest was over, I was sad to lose access to all of these venues as most of them were out of my budget if it weren’t for the contest.  Now it was time for them to pick a winner, as much as I hoped that I had won, I had already told myself that if I did not win it was fine, as I felt blessed just being a finalist and winning the 3 months of workspace.

Then I got the call.  I was working from home that day, and I was cooking myself some lunch.  As soon as the phone rang, my smoke detector starting going off (its really sensitive…I’m a great cook trust me). So naturally, I could not answer the phone with that loud beeping in the background. So I got the smoke detector to stop tripping, then I check my voicemails.  I couldnt believe that it was the ELEVATE team….I was like they are either calling to tell me I lost or I won!

I called them back and the told me I was the ONE! I was so excited, I cried, called my mom and prayed to God and thanked him for such a awesome blessing!

I still cannot believe that I won this awesome prize and although I have been in business and have helped hundred of people with their finances, it’s still priceless to receive the affirmation and backing from a outstanding organization like Fairfield and Marriott that my business is worth supporting.

I am so excited for the future and all of the upcoming projects that Finances Demystified has in store thanks to this $5,000 grant from Fairfield Inn & Suites!

Ever since Dominique Broadway developed Finances De•mys•ti•fied, monthly open conversations about money that are held at swanky venues throughout DC, she always envisioned spreading the motivating and encouraging words of financial freedom to the masses. Last night, several talented financial professionals and entrepreneurs were invited to help convey this message in an engaging Q&A  format. The panel consisted of:

• Tiffany Aliche, also known as the Budgetnista

• McKenzie Slaughter, founder of Beauty and the Bull Mag

• Nina Smith, publicist for TheRoot.com

• Chike Uzoka, founder of Valentine Global, LLC

This turned out to be an exciting event that showcased the insight of these experts. Dominique moderated the discussion while guests enjoyed the signature cocktails. Our experts took turns answering the guests questions. The discussion topics  ranged from tackling student loan debt, methods to paying off various types  of debt, to why you need a financial planner. Guests were also given direct advice on avoiding the common traps from interest rates, FICO scores and bankruptcy.

At the end of successful panel discussion, an interesting announcement was made.  This was the literally the first time the panel had met. Afterwards, intense conversations were held between all the young professionals with their swag bags in hand. Finances De•mys•ti•fied has truly taken a unique approach to financial literacy.  Next stop, Washington, DC & Atlanta!

For me, this is one of those days when I had to stop for second, reflect and ask myself, “Am I really headed to NYC to host a freaking Finances Demystified event?!”  I of course answered myself, “Hell yea!”

When I had the idea for these events, literally 2 years ago, I was very hesitant about actually pursuing it.  Now we all know that I love everything personal finance, investing and money related…but thats not the same for the rest of the world.  All I wanted was to make money something that people were not scared to talk about, something that was openly discussed and could become common knowledge for all…thats it nothing major.  I wanted money to be discussed in an environment, where people were not wearing suits, there were no powerpoint slides and you didn’t feel like were you being talked down to for not knowing what a stock was.  I wanted these events to occur in places you would not normally expect personal finance to be discussed, like lounges, bars and your favorite brunch spot.

As with any new idea you have, there is always hesitation and when it comes to a topic as frowned upon as personal finance….you see how it took me so long to host my first event.

Last November, I hosted my first Finances Demystified event at Dirty Martini in Washington, D.C. I remember being so scared, that no one was going to come. I just wanted to remove the stigma surrounding money and educate a few people…that’s it.  With all of the amazing events going on each evening in DC, I was beyond sure that no one would show up to a event based around personal finance.  But they did, and not just a few people about 65 people showed up! I was shocked!  People were drinking Student Loan Debt Killer Martinis (not surprisingly very popular), and ordering Roth IRA cocktails (you never hear these terms at a lounge), networking and obtaining some personal finance knowledge.

When I went home that evening and thought about what I had accomplished and all of the great feedback that I received from the event, I was literally in tears. To turn one of your Dreams2Reality is one of the best feelings in the world, and it’s addictive.  I have a had a few more events in DC, and now I want to share the Finances Demystified experience with the world!

I am physically on the bus as I type this post. I had to stop and share my story as often times, people think things just happen when you are on the outside looking in. We all get nervous and have doubts and hesitations…but what separates the people who dream and the ones that are making their dreams come true is ACTION!  Take action today on your dreams, don’t just think about them, you’ll thank me later 😉
